Taylor Swift Look What You Made Me Do

The single is the first from her forthcoming album ‘Reputation,’ due Nov. 10.

After three teasers, an album cover reveal and countless snake emojis, the wait is finally over: Taylor Swift has officially dropped her new single, “Look What You Made Me Do.”

As promised, the singer released her fresh tune promptly at midnight Friday on iTunes (Aug. 25). Unlike previous Swift singles, “Look What You Made Me Do” is fairly dark, both sonically and lyrically. Foreboding synths, eerie piano chords and a skittering beat rub up against old-timey sounds as Swift sings about karma, people who “laugh when they lie” and a list of names that she keeps.

“The world moves on another day, another drama-drama, but not for me, not for me, all I think about is karma,” she says in a half-rapped tone, reminiscent of Fergie, at one point. “Maybe I got mine but you’ll all get yours.”

If that isn’t ominous enough, toward the end of the song, Swift gets gleefully sinister. “I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? Oh, cuz she’s dead!” she says with a laugh.

In terms of where Swift’s mind is at these days, this repeated phrase (which calls back to “Blank Space”) offers a distinct clue: “I don’t trust nobody and nobody trusts me / I’ll be the actress starring in your bad dreams.”

Watch the lyric video from Swift and director Joseph Kahn below. Kahn promises the music video is “coming soon.”

While Swift has certainly been known for her surprises, she was very clear about the arrival of her newest song. The superstar initially set the Internet ablaze on Aug. 18 when she wiped all of her social media clean, following it up with an eerie 10-second video of a snake’s tail that sparked talk of a new song or even an album — and triggered countless snake emojis. She shared two more snake-related videos before delivering the official news Wednesday, and the Taylor mania hasn’t stopped since.

“Look What You Made Me Do” is the first single from Swift’s forthcoming sixth album, Reputation, which will be released Nov. 10 and is the follow-up to 2014’s album of the year winner,1989. Take a listen (or 100) to “Look What You Made Me Do” below.
